    Campfire Coffee Recipes

    Want to know a few secrets to making a good cup of campfire coffee? There are lots of recipes for making coffee in a plain pot over a campfire or for your camping coffee pot. Try a few varieties to see what suits your taste the best. Here are a few good recipes to get you started so your morning or evening brew tastes good every time.

    Traditional Campfire Coffee Recipes

    Recipe 1.  Bring two quarts of water to a good, rolling boil in a camping coffee pot. Take it from the fire and add 2 handfuls of fine ground coffee. Keep in mind that whoever makes the coffee will change the results of this traditional recipe. Steep for 4 minutes. The secret to good campfire coffee is adding a few tablespoons of cold water to the mixture after steeping. This settles the grounds to the bottom. Then pour slowly to keep as many grounds out of your cup as possible.

    Recipe 2.  Add 6 teaspoons of ground coffee into a camping coffee pot, and pour 3 pints of cold water over the grounds. Put the pot on the fire and bring it to a boil. Take it off the heat and let steep for 3 minutes. Don't forget the secret. Add those few tablespoons of cold water to the mixture after steeping to settle the grounds. This makes about 6 cups of good campfire coffee.

    Campfire Perculator Coffee Pot

    Recipe 3.  This is the most common method of making campfire coffee. Start with 1½ tablespoons of coarsely ground coffee for each 6 oz of water when using a perculator coffee pot. Here is a trick if you end up with grounds in your coffee. Poke a hole in a regular coffee filter and put it in the perk basket. Watch the percolator for the coffee color. The longer it perks the stronger your coffee will be. A perculator coffee pot takes practice but they make great campfire coffee.

    Good Tip

    If you use unpleasant lake, well or tap water your coffee will never taste very good. Coffee is 98% water so using good water will make all of difference in good or bad coffee. Bring good water with you and you will enjoy your campfire coffee a lot more.

    Starbucks Coffee Company

    In 1971 Starbucks Coffee Company was founded in Seattle, Washington by three businessmen who had a love for coffee and tea and wanted Seattle to have access to it.

    The Starbucks Coffee Company grew slowly and by 1981 had 4 retail stores and a roasting plant that sold whole bean coffee in Seattle.

    In 1983 the marketing manager had a vision of re-creating the magic and romance behind the Italian coffee bar and wanted to test out the concept of selling espresso by the cup. When Starbucks Coffee opened its 6th store in downtown Seattle, the idea was a hit and within 2 months the store was serving over 700 customers a day, out selling the whole bean locations by 3 times.

    In 1987, the owners of Starbucks Coffee Company decided to sell the business along with the name and it was bought by a group of local investors for $3.7 million.

    In the next few years investors were told they would open 125 Starbucks coffee stores in the next five years. Starting from a base of 17 stores in 1987, the company expanded quickly to Vancouver, Portland and Chicago.

    By 1991 Starbucks had moved into the mail-order catalog business, licensed airport stores and expanded into California.

    In 1992 the company went public. After the initial public offering, Starbucks continued to grow at a phenomenal pace. Within 5 years the number of Starbucks Coffee stores grew tenfold, with locations in the US, Japan and Singapore.

    Starbucks initiated several successful product and brand extensions including offering coffee on United Airlines flights. They began selling premium teas through its Tazo Tea Company. They distributed whole bean and ground coffee to supermarkets through an agreement with Kraft and premium coffee ice cream with Dreyers. Starbucks even sold CDs in its retail stores.

    Starbucks began turning its name into a household word not through advertising but through word of mouth. In fiscal 2004, Starbucks opened a record 1,344 stores worldwide. The once a small regional roaster, Starbucks Coffee Company, now has more than 9,000 locations in 34 countries serving approximately 20 million customers a week.

    Specialty Gourmet Coffee

    Specialty gourmet coffee is a very hot commodity in today’s market. The consumption of gourmet coffee has steadily grown with consumers enjoying the more sophisticated tastes of the specialty gourmet beans.

    Specialty gourmet coffees, or some times called premium coffees, are exceptional coffee beans grown only in ideal coffee-producing climates. These coffee beans have unique characteristics because of the soil they grow in and tend to have very distinctive flavors.

    Specialty gourmet coffee has a balanced flavor and richer taste than the standard mass-produced coffee. These coffee beans go through a rigorous process of certification that is stricter to help keep the quality high.

    In the 1974 issue of the "Tea & Coffee Trade Journal", Erna Knutsen first used the term ‘specialty coffee’ to describe these coffee beans that are produced in special microclimates with these distinctive, exceptional flavors.

    In 1982 the Specialty Coffee Association of America was created by coffee professionals to help set quality standards for the specialty coffee trade.

    Since the 1990’s the growing popularity of the coffee houses and specialty gourmet coffee retailers, have made gourmet coffee one of the fastest growing food services markets in the world. In the United States alone, it nets approximately $8.5 billion a year.

    Some have compared specialty gourmet coffee to wine. The aromas and flavors have similarities in how the consumer connects with the two beverages. The characteristics of gourmet coffee however, are more complex. The coffee bean is more dependent on altitudes, climate and soil variation than with the grapes used for wine.
