    Coffee Tips

Here are a few coffee tips.

  • If you prefer your coffee weaker, make it full strength, then dilute it with hot water or milk. It will taste much better than trying to use less coffee.

  • Water softeners are great but not for your coffee. Artifically softened water will produce bitter tasting coffee. Since coffee is 98% water it makes sense to use pure and clean water with no artificial ingredients.

  • The best solution for keeping your coffee fresh and hot is transferring your coffee into a thermos or air pot coffee dispensor. This isolates the coffee from air, slowing down the oxidation process. The coffee will last up to 1 hour before you start losing the good flavor.

  • A good test for freshness of a coffee bean is to actually bite into the bean. If it has a crisp bite and a strong, full-flavored aftertaste, it is fresh. However, if it is chewy or bitter, it is not.

  • Freshly ground coffee makes a wonderful potpourri. The smell of coffee will mask the "foulest" of odors. Replace aromatherapy scents with something that a true coffee lover appreciates, that wonderful smell of freshly ground coffee.

  • When mixing desserts and coffees, the more plain the dessert, the lighter the roast of the coffee you may want to accompany it. Espresso goes well with richer desserts and lighter roasted coffees with less rich desserts.

  • If you want your coffee to stay hot longer, heat your coffee cup or mug with hot water and remove the water just before pouring in your coffee. This will keep your coffee much hotter a lot longer.

  • Never store your coffee in its original bag. Transfer your whole beans immediately into a ceramic or glass container with a rubber seal and preferably one that does not allow light through it. Air, light, heat and moisture are enemies of coffee.

How To Choose A Coffee Maker

Want to know how to choose a coffee maker? When you go to buy a coffee maker there are so many choices it's hard to know which one to pick.

To end up with a coffee maker that is perfect for you, you need to consider not only basic features, but some others you may want to keep in mind.

The first thing you need to decide in how to choose coffee maker is what type of filter you want. Drip coffee makers offer a basket type filter or a cone shaped filter.

As an example, Mr. Coffee brand coffee makers are known for basket type filters that swing out to put coffee in or take grounds out. With cone type filters you fill the coffee and take grounds out from the top. An advantage of cone type filters is they are less prone to spillage.

You may also want to consider a gold tone filter to give your coffee a richer taste. These fine gold screen mesh filters allow new flavorful coffee oils in your cup but they do require regular cleaning.

Another major consideration for how to choose a coffee maker is how convenient is the coffee pot to clean. For example, coffee makers with a pot that has a long and slender neck will be harder to clean than one with a wider opening at the top.

If your hand can easily fit inside the coffee pot, it will make cleaning the pot very easy. But if it's hard to clean with a small opening, you may clean it less often. That will affect the taste of your coffee over time due to the build up of oils and residue.

Another smart tip for how to choose coffee maker is look for the temperature your coffee will reach when brewing. The water temperature needs to be between 195 to 205 degree degrees Fahrenheit.

In general, the less expensive coffee makers do not reach these temperatures but the best brand names will advertise this. If you are looking for the best coffee maker for your money, this should be a consideration. After all, you want your coffee maker to make sensible tasting coffee.

It's easy to get really confused with all of the models and choices of coffee makers. So remember these tips the next time you go shopping so you'll know how to choose a coffee maker and get just the right one for you.

How Much Caffeine Is In Decaf Coffee?

If you drink decaf coffee, how much caffeine is really left? A lot of people drink decaf coffee because caffeine keeps them awake or their doctor has told them to stay away from caffeine.

While most decaf coffee has significantly less caffeine than caffeinated coffees, they are not totally caffeine free. Coffee must have at least 97 percent of its caffeine removed to qualify as decaffeinated coffee in the United States.

So around 5 milligrams of caffeine are still present in a 6 ounce cup of decaf coffee as opposed to the 100 to 150 milligrams in 6 ounces of brewed coffee. Tea has much less caffeine than coffee, so most decaf tea has even less caffeine than decaf coffee.

Coffee is always sold as decaffeinated rather than caffeine free. The difference between caffeine free and decaffeinated is decaffeinated means that the caffeine has been removed where as caffeine free means no caffeine has been added.

There are several methods currently used for decaffeinating coffee. They use everything from chemicals found naturally in fruits, water processes, carbon filters to carbon dioxide methods.

The caffeine from these decaffeination processes is remanufactured and used in medicines and soft drinks. Even though there is a slight amount of caffeine left in decaf coffee, the trace amount is not a significant problem for people who don't want the effects of caffeine in their systems.
